2018-07-25 18:40:00

As of July 23, a total of 100 cases of dengue fever were reported in 13 prefecture-level cities, a 38% increase compared with the same period in 2017 (72 cases), and there were no deaths. Among them, 18 were local cases, including 13 cases in Guangzhou, 2 in Zhongshan, 1 in Foshan, Yangjiang and Zhanjiang respectively; 82 were overseas imported cases of infection, including 32 cases in Guangzhou, 21 in Shenzhen, 6 in Foshan, 4 in Shantou, 4 in Jiangmen, 3 in Zhongshan, 3 in Chaozhou, 3 in Zhuhai, 2 in Dongguan, 2 in Zhanjiang and 1 in Zhaoqing and Maoming respectively.

Experts estimate that Guangdong province has currently entered the dengue fever local epidemic season, and that local cases of dengue fever epidemic have been reported in many areas. Surrounding countries and regions including Southeast Asia face the peak of dengue fever epidemic. The humid and rainy climate in Guangdong province recently facilitates the breeding of mosquitoes, and the density of mosquitoes in some areas is relatively high. Besides, factors including the summer vacation and Canton Fair increase the population flow. Therefore, the risk of the spread of dengue fever epidemic in the province further increases. Guangzhou, Foshan and other Pearl River Delta regions are high-risk areas for the local dengue fever epidemic currently. The local epidemic risks further increase in cities adjacent to Guangzhou and Foshan and the previous epidemic areas including east Guangdong region and west Guangdong region.
For the prevention and control of dengue fever and the safeguard of people’s health, the Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission remind that:

First, everyone acts together to clean up stagnantwater: dengue fever spreads mainly through the bite of aedes albopictus (spotted mosquitoes) which breedmostly in stagnant water. Thus, the key measure of the prevention and control of dengue fever is to deal with the origin and clean the breeding places of mosquitoes (indoor and outdoor stagnant water). We call for citizens to start from ourselves and act together to turn potsupside down, clean up indoor and outdoor stagnant water regularly, clean the environment around residential areas, eliminate the breeding places of mosquitoes in order toprevent dengue fever.

Second, strengthen the awareness of preventing dengue fever and prevent mosquitoes when traveling: with the tourist season of summer vacation coming, tourists planning to travel to dengue epidemic areasshould take personal protection measures including wearing light-colored long-sleeved clothes and usingmosquito nets and insect repellents. Within 15 days after travelling in dengue epidemic areas, if fever, skin flushing, muscle and bone pain and other symptoms are found, tourists should seek medical treatment as early as possible and explain their history of travel and mosquito bites.

Third, the epidemic prevention and control should be strict with rigorous measures: all regions should effectively implement the idea of prevention first and theinfectious disease prevention and control responsibility of “territorial government, departments, units and individuals”, reinforce the mobilization, strengthen mosquito vector surveillance and enhance suspected case investigation in medical institutions so as to achieve “early detection, early reporting, early isolation, early treatment” and the effective implementation of the comprehensive prevention and control measures of dengue fever. Areas that have found local and imported dengue epidemic should strictly observe the dengue prevention and control related technical guidelines, isolate the cases quickly and decisively, carry out emergency mosquito eradication at epidemic points, clean the breeding places of mosquitoes and do other settlement work to rapidly curb the spread of the epidemic.

Fourth, jointly involve in the patriotic health campaign: all regions, relevant units and the public arerequired to promote and participate in the patriotic health campaign, respond actively to the mosquito eradication in the whole province, implement the environment and sanitation improvement system and undertake clean-up activities comprehensively. Key areas including nursery institutions and schools and crowded areas including rural-urban fringe zones, residential communities, construction sites, commercial markets, hospitals, railway stations, scenic spots, parks and municipal projects should enhance property management and environmental sanitation remediation, clean up all kinds of stagnant water, garbage and hygienically neglected corners timely, carry out mosquito eradicationscientifically and reduce the density of mosquitoes to prevent dengue epidemic by mass prevention and mass treatment.
